
A Bell 407 helicopter (registration ZS-RYL, MSN 53952) operated by Eskom was substantially damaged on 2 March 2026 during a training flight near Alberton, Gauteng, south of Johannesburg. The helicopter had departed from and was scheduled to return to Rand Airport when the incident occurred during autorotation manoeuvre training. During the manoeuvre, the aircraft suffered substantial damage, including a severed tail boom, bent landing skids, and major damage to the main rotor blades and rotor head. Despite the severity of the damage, the helicopter remained upright and both occupants escaped without injuries or fatalities.
