CANADA and NIGERIA have significantly expanded their bilateral Air Transport Agreement, bringing direct scheduled air services between the two countries closer to reality for the first time. Announced by CANADA’s Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon, the revised agreement allows airlines from both countries to operate up to 14 scheduled passenger flights per week, while each side can also operate up to 10 weekly all-cargo services. The framework further introduces fifth-freedom traffic rights for cargo, enabling carriers to transport freight between third countries as part of services originating or terminating in their home country, and permits multiple airlines from each country to operate scheduled services. The agreement comes as the CANADA-NIGERIA air travel market has doubled over the past decade, making NIGERIA CANADA’s third-largest bilateral aviation market in Africa after MOROCCO and ALGERIA.
