    SENEGAL has inaugurated the 19-kilometre, double-track electrified Diamniadio–Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD) extension of the Train Express Régional (TER), completing the second phase of the project and establishing a direct rail connection between the country’s main international gateway, Diamniadio and Dakar ahead of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. Officially inaugurated on 28 September 2026, the new section includes a dedicated airport station, signalling infrastructure and seven new dual-mode trains capable of operating on both electricity and diesel, increasing the TER fleet to 22 trains. Services between Dakar and Diamniadio will operate at eight-minute intervals, while trains between Diamniadio and AIBD will run every 24 minutes, providing a high-capacity alternative to road transport for passengers arriving at the airport. The extension is particularly important for Dakar 2026, which will take place from 31 October to 13 November across Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly and is expected to involve approximately 30,000 accredited participants, including around 15,000 international visitors.
