KENYA has commissioned a new eight-storey air traffic control tower at Kisumu International Airport, with President William Ruto officially inaugurating the facility on 14 September 2026 and replacing a colonial-era tower that had served the airport for 53 years. According to the State Department for Aviation and Aerospace Development, the new tower is equipped with modern ICT, communications and surveillance systems designed to meet international standards, while its elevated controller positions provide an unobstructed 360-degree view of the runway, apron and aircraft movements, supporting safer and more efficient air traffic management. The commissioning was attended by Principal Secretary for Aviation and Aerospace Development Teresia Mbaika, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) Board Chairman Brown Ondego and Acting Director General Nicholas Bodo, alongside senior national and county government officials, including Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum Opiyo Wandayi, Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning John Mbadi, Kisumu Governor Professor Anyang’ Nyong’o and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga.
