Introduction.

Authorities in the DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO have reopened Bunia Airport in Ituri Province, the epicentre of the country’s latest Ebola outbreak, following a sharp decline in suspected cases from 906 to 116 within a week, according to the World Health Organization. Transport authorities said conditions now allow for a “gradual and safe resumption” of flights, with strict health measures such as temperature screening, handwashing stations, and mask distribution implemented for passengers and crew. The reopening has been welcomed by travellers and businesses who had faced severe mobility disruptions amid the outbreak, which had also worsened insecurity-linked travel challenges in the region. Officials reported 321 confirmed Ebola cases and 48 deaths in Ituri at the time of reopening, while maintaining that continued monitoring and public reassurance campaigns are underway to ensure the outbreak remains under control.
