
Introduction.
Ministers meeting at the 5th Ordinary Session of the African Union Specialized Technical Committee on Transport and Energy, held from 21–25 April 2026 in Johannesburg, have approved a proposed revision of the constitution of the African Civil Aviation Commission, marking a key step toward strengthening Africa’s aviation governance framework. The revision is aimed at enhancing AFCAC’s legal mandate, improving regulatory oversight, and supporting the implementation of continental initiatives such as the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM). The decision reflects growing political commitment within the African Union to modernise institutional structures in the aviation sector. The revised text will now undergo formal AU legal procedures before being submitted to the Assembly of Heads of State and Government for final adoption.
