Binani Air has awarded a contract to an international aviation company to develop a major aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, in a project aimed at reducing NIGERIA’s dependence on overseas heavy maintenance and retaining more aviation expenditure within the country. Announced on 30 August 2026, the project is expected to take approximately 12 months to construct, potentially enabling the facility to become operational around Q3 2027, although Binani Air has not disclosed the contractor, total investment value, planned hangar capacity or specific aircraft maintenance capabilities. The airline estimates that expanded domestic heavy-maintenance capacity could retain or attract about US$218 million in foreign exchange annually, reflecting the substantial costs Nigerian operators incur when sending aircraft abroad for major checks, including maintenance fees, aircraft ferrying, crew travel, logistics and components. According to Chairperson Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed (Aishatu Binani), Nigerian carriers currently rely heavily on MRO facilities in EUROPE, the MIDDLE EAST, EGYPT and ETHIOPIA for major C- and D-checks.…
