    KENYA has awarded a $2.9 billion contract to China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) to upgrade and expand Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), AFRICA’s busiest aviation hub, after cancelling a previously proposed 30-year concession deal with Adani Airport Holdings due to public opposition and legal concerns. The earlier Adani arrangement was dropped following protests over issues of transparency, sovereignty, and the transfer of control of a strategic national asset. The new project reinforces China’s strong infrastructure presence in KENYA and is expected to begin immediately, with funding sourced through the National Infrastructure Fund and commercial loans backed by future airport charges. The expansion comes as regional competition intensifies, with Ethiopia developing a major new airport near Addis Ababa and Rwanda investing in its own aviation infrastructure to position themselves as leading regional hubs.
