
Islamic State in the Sahel has claimed responsibility for a coordinated attack on Niamey’s international airport and the adjacent air force base in Niger. The assault began shortly after midnight on Thursday, with motorcycle-riding militants using heavy weapons and drones, damaging at least three aircraft—one operated by Air Côte d'Ivoire and two by ASKY AIRLINES. Nigerien authorities said security forces repelled the attackers, killing 20 militants and arresting 11, while airport operations were later stabilized. The attack underscores escalating jihadist activity in the Sahel amid Niger’s strained relations with ECOWAS, neighboring states, and France following the July 2023 coup, and comes as the junta-led government deepens alignment with regional allies in the Association of Sahel States (AES).
