African Aviation Trails

This trail highlights fleet expansion, aviation training, and operational capability growth across Africa, with new aircraft acquisitions strengthening VIP, regional, and commercial aviation markets. Airlines in Burkina Faso, Gabon, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Ethiopia are enhancing capacity, while Egypt expands pilot training, and Botswana receives defence airlift support to improve regional mobility.

African airlines accelerated fleet expansion and capability development through new aircraft deliveries, wet leases, simulator acquisitions, and training investments. African airlines continued to strengthen and modernise their fleets through new aircraft deliveries and strategic leasing arrangements, while aviation service providers advanced emergency medical aviation capabilities and complex ferry operations. At the same time, operational challenges persisted, with Fly Gabon facing fleet disruptions following the grounding of three ATR72-600 aircraft, highlighting the importance of fleet resilience across the continent's aviation sector.

This edition features EgyptAir's delivery of its fifth Airbus A350-900 aircraft, reinforcing its long-haul fleet renewal strategy, Nesma Airlines' planned Airbus A321 acquisition to support capacity growth and its new brand identity, Kenya Airways' return of the Boeing 777-300ER to passenger service as part of its fleet restoration and long-haul expansion, and ASKY Airlines' forthcoming eighth Boeing 737 MAX 8 to strengthen regional connectivity across Africa. Together, these developments underscore African airlines' continued investment in modern, fuel-efficient aircraft, expanded route networks, enhanced passenger experience, and improved operational efficiency as carriers position themselves to meet growing travel demand and strengthen their competitiveness in regional and international markets.

African aviation saw multiple fleet expansions and strategic deals, including Lift adding an A320, United Nigeria Airlines expanding with ERJ-190s and 737-800s, and Zebu Air introducing a 737 freighter. Renegade Air and Flightlink boosted regional capacity with Dash 8 aircraft, while Nile Air and Air Tanzania expanded narrowbody fleets. Uganda Airlines announced a major Boeing order, Ethiopian Airlines added a Twin Otter for remote operations, BUA Group received Africa’s first Global 8000 business jet, and Angola became the first African customer for the L-39NG trainer.
